Straight Outta Portland, Aminé Coming Through With a Brand New Album, “Limbo”
For trap, hip-hop, and rap fans galore, Aminé’s collection of songs is what you want to be finishing the year with. Here's what you need to know about Aminé, and why you need to check him out.
It’s expected to see rappers starting out from hot spots like Compton, Brooklyn, or the overall outskirts of New York City. Aminé kind of set a new tone by bursting out with talent from Portland and rattling the rap scene—showing off the city’s diversity.
He made a name for himself as a rapper, artist, singer and director. Aminé also makes sure to showcase proudly his Ethiopian heritage, be it through his songs or overall life. The artist’s main artistic inspirations are Kanye West, André 3000, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson. He always insists on preferring humble, woodsy-like atmospheres when recording than fancy studios.
After beginning a career in music since high school, he went on to build quite an audience starting 2015, and acquiring quite an extensive fanbase.
“I never want a basic reaction,” he tells Republic Records. “I want you to always have questions. I hope to challenge listeners to wonder why. Those are the artists I care about.”
And indeed, we have some questions about Mr. Aminé's new album. Mostly concerning where his creativity, and versatility come from.
“Limbo” is the artist’s second album, which came out in Aug., but has only recently been available on Spotify, in Dec. 4.
A collection of 21 songs, the tracks vary from fun, party mixes to heartfelt and serious riffs.
Some of our favourites of the upbeat bunch include “Gelato,” “Zack and Cody” that’s sung alongside renowned rapper, Valee, and “Shimmy.”
Other songs like “Kobe,” an obvious ode to the late basketball legend, Kobe Bryant; “Mama” written as a thank-you piece for his mother, and “Buzzin” which is a beautiful love song, just hit differently.
All Aminé songs definitely find a way to make it in your playlists, but the last three we cited might get you up in your feels and make you call your mother or your ex. Careful.
